Can You Lose Belly Fat and Still Eat Carbs?

Losing belly fat is usually one of the most stubborn areas to lose fat. When people come at John Canlas Nutrition to lose fat, they usually point out that they want to lose belly fat and arm fat.

Rightfully so, as excess belly fat can make you look “bloated”, cause lower back problems and most important of all – bring your confidence down. In this article, I tell you what causes belly fat and answer the most important question – can you lose your belly fat and still eat carbs?

In general women and men tend to accumulate body in different areas of the body. For men, we tend to accumulate body fat in the stomach area and women tend to accumulate body fat in the hip area and/or arms.

There’s MANY different variations on how an individual accumluate body fat but the one that is most requested that people want to get rid of is BELLY FAT.

Excess body fat – whether it’s on the belly or arms really is the cause of eating excess calories overtime.

Whether it comes from carbs, protein, or fats, when you eat extra calories that your body doesn’t need over a period of time – it causes you to accumulate extra body fat on your belly (or any part of your body).

You don’t necessarily have to stop eating carbs but here are some practical advice you can follow RIGHT NOW to lose belly fat:

  • Minimize highly processed foods (cupcakes, donuts, cakes – easy to overeat and packed with more calories than fruits or minimally processed foods)
  • Every meal needs to have a portion of lean protein, carbs, and some fat
  • Have fruit or vegetable in EVERY meal (hard to overeat)
  • Focus on consistent NOT perfection on meals (it’s ok to have bad days, ok days, and good days)

Carbs necessarily aren’t the enemy but it’s over eating over a period of time that MAKES you gain weight. Certain foods are easy to overeat. One of the things I mentioned is the highly processed foods – cupcakes, donuts, and cakes for example have very little nutrients in them but usually high in calories. It is best to minimize them (NOT avoid them).
