  • Aetna: Up to 26 visits/year for general nutrition, weight loss, and metabolic health. No co-pay.
  • Blue Shield: Often covers obesity, diabetes, overweight, and cholesterol management (unlimited).
  • Anthem Blue Cross: Typically unlimited for most plans. Most have no co-pays.
  • Hill Physicians | Sutter: Generally unlimited for most nutrition-related issues.
  • CCHP | Alameda Alliance: Typically ~7 visits/year.
  • Medicare: Coverage for Stage 3-5 CKD or T2 Diabetes (3 hrs first year, 2 hrs yearly thereafter).

  • Locate your insurance card.
  • Identify the Member Services phone number
    (usually on the back).

“Hi, I’d like to verify coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy (nutrition counseling). Please confirm if CPT codes 97802 and 97803 are covered.”
